Farnanes, Co. Cork

This garden came with a plea from my clients ‘Our house is in glorious concrete isolation, Dominick can you do something with it?

The house was surrounded by concrete and tarmac and a lot of it! So softening with a good design was our first goal. We built four large 18” high stone ‘Banana’ shaped Beds which wrapped around the house and were planted with structural and flowering plants. A large loggia covered in scented plants added to the design. A Chinese black limestone patio completed the overall look. The gem in this garden is the large sunken fire bowl, which my clients adore and now use regularly. The planting schemes are extensive and low maintenance. All beds were covered in mypex weed mat and a plum red gravel. At the far end of the garden a large garage provided an interesting challenge, we decided to build a large loggia the full length of the garage and cover it with grape vines, honeysuckle, Italian jasmine and solanum. Last but not least our bamboo ‘moongate’ and screen is a big hit with my client’s children and their friends.
